Reading Sparks the Imagination - Label that Book
Do you think
you have a good imagination? How do you think you developed it? Our
innate ability to imagine, defined as "the power and the process of
producing mental images and ideas" Wikipedia, is enhanced by reading.
Reading text on a page is all about comprehension and in order to
successfully comprehend what we read, we must be able to visualize the
text in our minds. This is a God given gift and one which we should
cultivate in our children by reading to them. We should also encourage
our children to read.
I remember the first time my daughter started comprehending stories
which were read to her and the words she chose to describe back to me
what we read. At that point she went from being read to (listening /
hearing words) to learning and comprehending. The story "made sense" to
her. Remarkable! Then she began using different words to describe the
characters and events specific to our reading and I knew, right then
and there, with my mouth wide open, that my child 'got it!'
There are loads of resources available to help parents nuture and
cultivate a child's desire to read. Start off with an environment in
the home conducive to reading: set aside a comfortable place in the
home with appropriate lighting; schedule quiet time; make reading (fun
story / non picture) books available. Reading is Fundamental offers 10
great tips for parents wanting to encourage children to read. Some of
which are as follows:
1. Model reading - let children see that YOU are reading and learning something. This will encourage them to follow.
2. Tell stories together - make family stories a touch point
perhaps. Engage their creative imagination with fun adventures they
would like to do with the family if they could.
3. Write with your child - encourage your child to write and draw on
his or her own. This helps their spelling and of course word or site
recognition of words.

When you are finished reading your books, be sure to mark the event with fun bookplates or maybe some childrens book plates, all of which can be selected from the book label and bookplate category by theme available through our fun personalized stationery store.
